Editorial Independence, Product Evaluation & Partnership Standards

Effective Date: January 2024
Last Updated: April 2026

This Editorial Independence, Product Evaluation & Partnership Standards policy outlines how Safe in the Seat develops educational content, evaluates products, and participates in commercial relationships.

Safe in the Seat maintains a strict separation between educational content and commercial relationships. Partnerships, sponsorships, affiliate programs, and other business arrangements do not influence the safety information, product guidance, or recommendations provided within Safe in the Seat’s independent educational content.

Safe in the Seat is an independent child passenger safety education platform led by Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians (CPSTs). Our mission is to help families make confident, informed decisions about car seat safety.

All educational content is created or reviewed by currently certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians and informed by CPST training, real-world installation experience, and practical considerations of child and vehicle fit.

These standards exist to ensure Safe in the Seat content remains safety-focused, transparent, and independent.

Editorial Standards Summary

Safe in the Seat operates under the following core principles:

• Educational content is created or reviewed by currently certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians.
• Product guidance is based on safety standards, child fit, vehicle compatibility, and real-world CPST experience.
• Brand relationships, sponsorships, and affiliate programs do not influence independent educational content or recommendations.
• Sponsored content and commercial collaborations are clearly disclosed.
• Safe in the Seat maintains editorial independence in all safety guidance and product evaluations.

1. Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to establish clear standards governing:

• how Safe in the Seat evaluates products
• how educational content is developed and presented
• how Safe in the Seat participates in affiliate programs, sponsorships, and brand partnerships

These standards ensure that Safe in the Seat content remains:

• safety focused
• independent and trustworthy
• transparent regarding commercial relationships
• consistent with professional child passenger safety practices

2. Content & Commercial Relationship Definitions

Safe in the Seat publishes several types of content and may participate in different types of commercial relationships. The following definitions clarify these categories.

2.1 Educational Content

Educational content refers to safety guidance, informational resources, and product education created independently by Safe in the Seat.

Educational content includes, but is not limited to:

• blog articles and educational guides
• social media posts focused on safety education
• product comparison content and buying guidance
• car seat installation education
• the Safe in the Seat Car Seat Finder Tool
• email newsletters and digital educational resources

Educational content is created or reviewed by currently certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians and is based on:

• CPST best practices
• child fit and development considerations
• vehicle compatibility
• real-world usability and installation experience

Educational content is developed independently and is not influenced by brand partnerships, sponsorships, or affiliate relationships. Editorial decisions rest entirely with Safe in the Seat and are driven by what is best for families, never by outside commercial relationships.

2.2 Affiliate Links

Safe in the Seat participates in affiliate marketing programs with certain retailers and marketplaces.

Affiliate links are links that allow Safe in the Seat to earn a commission if a product is purchased through that link. The retailer or affiliate network pays the commission, and it does not increase the price paid by the consumer.

Affiliate links may appear within:

• blog articles
• product recommendations
• shopping guides
• digital educational resources
• social media content

Products included in Safe in the Seat content are selected because they meet safety, fit, and usability considerations relevant to families. Affiliate participation does not determine which products appear in educational resources.

2.3 Sponsored Content

Sponsored content is content created in collaboration with a brand or retailer in which Safe in the Seat receives compensation in exchange for specific deliverables.

Sponsored content may include:

• sponsored social media posts
• sponsored educational campaigns
• product feature explanations
• new product introductions
• retail education initiatives

Sponsored collaborations are clearly disclosed when they occur.

Sponsorship does not guarantee product recommendations, rankings, or inclusion in independent educational content. All sponsored content must align with Safe in the Seat safety standards.

2.4 Brand and Retail Partnerships

Safe in the Seat may enter into longer-term collaborations with brands, manufacturers, or retailers to support education around child passenger safety.

These partnerships may include:

• educational campaigns
• retail safety education initiatives
• product education programs
• safety awareness campaigns
• industry collaborations

Brand and retail partnerships support educational initiatives but do not determine independent product evaluations or recommendations.

Safe in the Seat does not guarantee product recommendations, rankings, or editorial inclusion in any partnership. All editorial and content decisions remain independent.

2.5 Professional Services

Safe in the Seat offers optional professional services that provide families with individualized child passenger safety guidance.

These services may include:

• Talk to a Tech for written consultations
• 1:1 virtual car seat consultations
• other CPST-guided safety consultations offered through Safe in the Seat platforms

These services are designed to provide parents and caregivers with personalized educational support related to child passenger safety, including topics such as:

• car seat selection guidance
• installation questions
• child fit considerations
• vehicle compatibility questions
• travel or special circumstance guidance

Currently certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians provide professional services.

While these services provide individualized guidance, they are intended for educational purposes and do not replace manufacturer instructions, vehicle owner’s manuals, or in-person assistance from a local CPST when appropriate.

Participation in Safe in the Seat services does not influence product recommendations within Safe in the Seat educational content.

3. Product Evaluation Criteria

Car seats and related products referenced within Safe in the Seat content are evaluated using professional and practical criteria.

Evaluation factors may include:

• child fit and growth limits
• vehicle compatibility
• ease of installation and everyday use
• safety features and product design
• real-world CPST installation experience

Because every child, vehicle, and family situation is different, Safe in the Seat does not identify a single universally “best” car seat. Educational guidance is designed to help families determine which products may be appropriate for their specific circumstances.

4. Product Safety Standards

Safety is the primary consideration in all Safe in the Seat content.

Safe in the Seat does not promote, recommend, or feature products that do not meet its safety standards or professional evaluation criteria.

These standards apply to:

• car seats
• child passenger safety accessories
• travel and transportation-related products
• any product referenced within Safe in the Seat educational materials

Product evaluation considers:

• CPST best practices
• regulatory safety standards
• manufacturer instructions
• real-world usability factors that influence safe use

If a product raises safety concerns or does not meet evaluation criteria, it will not be recommended or promoted.

These standards apply regardless of affiliate relationships, sponsorships, or brand partnerships.

5. Editorial Independence

Safe in the Seat operates as an independent car seat safety education platform.

Educational guidance and product recommendations are based on:

• safety considerations
• child fit and development
• vehicle compatibility
• real-world installation and usability experience

Commercial relationships, including affiliate participation, sponsorships, or brand partnerships, do not determine product recommendations within independent educational resources.

Editorial decisions are made independently by Safe in the Seat and are guided solely by what best supports families making safe transportation decisions for their children.

6. Industry Relationships and Collaboration

Safe in the Seat may maintain professional relationships with manufacturers, retailers, safety organizations, and other industry stakeholders.

These relationships may include participation in educational initiatives, safety campaigns, product education programs, industry events, branded partnership or licensing agreements. Under such arrangements, Safe in the Seat may receive compensation associated with the relationship(s). Such relationships do not influence Safe in the Seat’s independent product evaluations or safety guidance, including products that may compete with those covered by such relationships.  Editorial decisions rest entirely with Safe in the Seat and are driven by what is best for families, never by outside commercial relationships.

7. Confidentiality

During collaborations, Safe in the Seat may receive product information or materials from manufacturers, retailers, or industry partners.

Safe in the Seat respects the confidentiality of non-public information shared through these relationships. Information provided by one partner will not be shared with other brands or third parties without authorization.

Each collaboration is treated independently, and confidential information is handled responsibly.

8. Product Samples

Safe in the Seat may occasionally receive product samples from manufacturers or retailers for product familiarization or hands-on evaluation.

Receiving a product sample does not guarantee that the product will be featured, recommended, or included in Safe in the Seat content.

Products provided for review are evaluated using the same safety and usability criteria described in this policy. Safe in the Seat does not accept compensation in exchange for favorable reviews or guaranteed product recommendations.

9. Hands-On Experience and Product Familiarity

Product references within Safe in the Seat content may be informed by:

• hands-on installation experience
• CPST training and certification knowledge
• review of manufacturer documentation and specifications
• observed child and vehicle fit patterns
• industry familiarity with commonly used products

While many products referenced by Safe in the Seat have been installed or evaluated through real-world CPST experience, not every product referenced may have been physically tested by Safe in the Seat.

Guidance is based on professional CPST knowledge, safety standards, and experience working with families across a wide range of vehicles and child sizes.

10. Commitment to Families

Safe in the Seat exists to support parents and caregivers in making informed decisions about child passenger safety.

Educational resources are designed to help families:

• understand car seat safety best practices
• choose a seat that fits their child and vehicle
• use their car seat correctly and confidently

Safe in the Seat remains committed to providing practical, trustworthy guidance that supports safer travel for children.

11. Limitations of Guidance

Information provided by Safe in the Seat is intended for educational and informational purposes related to child passenger safety.

While guidance is informed by CPST training and real-world experience, it cannot account for every individual circumstance.

Safety outcomes may vary based on factors including:

• proper installation of the car seat
• correct use of harnesses and restraints
• vehicle design and compatibility
• child size, age, and development
• adherence to manufacturer instructions

Safe in the Seat encourages caregivers to review manufacturer instructions and vehicle owner’s manuals and to seek individualized assistance from a certified Child Passenger Safety Technician when needed.

Safe in the Seat reserves the right to update product evaluations and guidance as new safety information, regulatory updates, or product changes become available.

Safe in the Seat’s goal is to provide families with clear, practical guidance to help them make safer decisions when transporting their children. Maintaining independence, transparency, and professional safety standards is central to that mission.
