That said, many parents don't mind the Doona's added weight because they can simply unfold the wheels instead of carrying the seat for long distances.
Higher Cost
A car seat stroller combo typically costs between $550 and $900, depending on the model and features you choose. At first glance, that price tag can feel a little shocking for an infant car seat. However, it's worth remembering that you're also getting a stroller built into the design. In fact, many premium travel systems cost just as much, or even more. If you were already planning to buy both pieces of gear, a car seat stroller combo may offer better value when you look at the big picture.
Short Lifespan

Right now, there are only three car seat stroller combos on the market, all from Doona or Evenflo. While they all offer the convenience of transforming from a car seat to a stroller in seconds, each has its own strengths and trade-offs.
Here's a closer look at the safety features, pricing, and standout differences of each model to help you decide which one best fits your family's needs:
Doona+
The original Doona introduced the world's first car seat stroller combo. (Or, as the company calls it, the first complete and fully integrated travel system.) It comes with everything you need to get started, including a car seat base, infant insert, head support, and a vehicle seat protector. And yes, you can use the included seat protector because Doona designed and tested it specifically for this car seat. (Just don't use an aftermarket seat protector unless your car seat manufacturer specifically approves it.)
At about 17 pounds without the base, the Doona+ weighs noticeably more than a standard infant carrier. It also takes up a bit more front-to-back space when installed, so it may not work as well in smaller vehicles. However, if those aren't concerns for your family, the Doona+ delivers incredible convenience. In just a few seconds, you can transform it from a car seat into a stroller without attaching a separate stroller frame.
The Doona+ offers two modes: car seat mode and stroller mode.
The Doona infant car seat works best from birth until around 9 to 12 months. Though the seat is approved for babies starting at 4 pounds, we don't think it fits small infants or preemies well. The lowest harness position measures about 7 inches, which would be too tall for most babies under 7 lbs. Before using any car seat, always make sure the harness straps sit at or just below your baby's shoulders and that the overall fit matches the manufacturer's guidelines.

Doona X
Recently, Doona introduced the Doona X, an upgraded version of its popular car seat stroller combo. Like the original, it transforms between two modes: car seat and stroller. Its biggest upgrade is the addition of three recline positions in stroller mode. This gives your baby more flexibility to sit up and explore or recline and rest while you're out and about. It also comes with a car seat base, infant insert, and a manufacturer-approved vehicle seat protector.
The Doona X has dimensions similar to the Doona+. For that reason, we probably wouldn't recommend it for smaller vehicles with limited front-seat clearance.
The Doona X includes several important safety upgrades, including patented shock absorbers, improved side-impact protection (Doona SIP), a load leg, and rigid lower anchors. It still has the anti-rebound handle. It also replaces the rethread harness with a no-rethread harness and adjustable headrest. This makes it much easier to get a proper fit as your child grows. The Doona X base is much easier to install than the Doona+ base.
Like the Doona+, this infant car seat will likely work best from birth until around 9 to 12 months. We have not yet seen any smaller than average babies in this seat, so we can't comment on preemie fit yet. If you're expecting a smaller baby, we'd recommend choosing one of our favorite infant car seats for preemies instead.

Evenflo Shyft DualRide
The Evenflo Shyft DualRide offers another take on the car seat stroller combo. Like the Doona car seat models, it transforms from an infant carrier into a stroller in just a few seconds, making errands and travel much simpler. It comes with a car seat base, infant insert, and integrated stroller frame.
One of the biggest differences is how the stroller is designed. While the Doona keeps the wheels permanently attached to the car seat, the Shyft DualRide allows you to detach the infant carrier from the stroller frame whenever you need to. That means you can carry just the 9-pound car seat instead of lifting the entire stroller. As a result, it becomes much easier to carry into the house, daycare, or doctor’s office.
If you're expecting a very small baby, we'd skip the Doona models and choose the Shyft DualRide instead. Its lowest harness position measures about 4.5 inches, allowing it to fit even the tiniest newborns and many preemies properly. Like the Doona, however, it has a fairly large front-to-back footprint when installed. Because of this, it may not be the best choice for compact vehicles with limited front-seat space.
One of the biggest drawbacks to this seat is the baseless installation when the wheels are attached. You must rearrange two of the wheels before installing the seat and then move them back before using it as a stroller again. This makes it one of the worst options for caregivers who rely on rideshares.
