How long should a child be rear-facing?
One of the most common questions we get asked is “How long should my child stay rear-facing?”
We like to say that safety is a spectrum and often refer to it in a safe, safer, safest framework. Both the Evenflo Revolve360 Slim and Revolve360 Extend can be used rear-facing until a child reaches 50 pounds or 48 inches, whichever comes first. The safest option would be to keep your child rear-facing until they reach either 50 pounds OR 48”. The safe option is to keep your child rear-facing until they reach the forward-facing minimums for your state and the car seat. The Evenflo Revolve seats require that the child is at least 2 years old, 30 pounds, AND 35 inches tall. The safer option is somewhere between those two options.
Are swivel seats safe?
When used properly, swivel seats are very safe! Although rotating car seats are newer to the US market, they have been around in Europe for a very long time. All car seats sold in the United States must meet federal safety standards, including rotating car seats. A swivel seat can be a safe choice when it fits your child and vehicle and is installed and used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
They are just as safe as seats that do not swivel. The Evenflo Revolve seats have 2 pieces. They come with the base and the seat. The base is installed with the seat belt or lower anchors, plus the top tether. The seat then clicks into the base. Rotate the seat into a locked position (either rear- or forward-facing) before driving. This ensures the seat stays on the base in the event of harsh braking or a crash. Both of the Evenflo Revolve rotating car seats also have an anti-rebound bar built into the base, which helps limit backward movement in a crash.
Can swivel seats fit 3 across?
In some cases, swivel seats can work in a 3-across configuration. The Evenflo Revolve Slim is often a great option for this scenario. It’s only 16.7” wide, making it one of the slimmest car seats on the market. When placed next to a low-profile forward-facing seat, or a booster, you can often use the swivel function. However, it may not swivel with a rear-facing seat beside it.

Revolve Slim
Narrowest convertible swivel seat on the market
Good For You If:
- you want a swivel seat
- you want a narrow car seat
- you want an easy-to-install seat
- you want to use a convertible seat from birth
- you don’t mind buying a booster down the line
The Evenflo Revolve Slim is the slimmest swivel seat on the market, at only 16.7” wide. It is very easy to install, and when installed with the seat belt and top tether, you can use it rear- and forward-facing without changing the installation. This makes it a good option for caregivers who want to use the same seat for different children. The Revolve360 Slim can be used from birth when the baby meets the seat’s minimum requirements and gets an appropriate harness fit. This version of the Revolve does not have a booster mode, so you’ll need to purchase a dedicated booster when your child is ready. For many families, a separate booster can still be a practical and affordable choice.
Revolve Extend
3-in-1 seat with rear-facing, forward-facing, and high-back booster modes
Good For You If:
- you want a swivel seat
- you don’t need 3 across
- you want an easy-to-install seat
- you want to use a convertible seat from birth
- you want a seat that has a high back booster mode
- you have a larger child
The Evenflo Revolve Extend is a good option for caregivers who do not need to fit 3 across. Like the Revolve Slim, it is very easy to install, and when installed with the seat belt and top tether, you can use it rear- and forward-facing without changing the installation. When you are ready to use the high-back booster mode, you will need to change how the seat is installed, since you will need the seat belt to go over the child. The Slim can be used from birth when the baby meets the seat’s minimum requirements and gets an appropriate harness fit. The Revolve Extend is a good option for higher-percentile kids because it has a wider seating space and a very tall harness height.

Both seats rotate, have the same rear-facing limit, and offer an easy-to-use installation system. The biggest differences are width, seating space, and whether the seat converts into a booster.
Neither seat is universally better. The Revolve360 Slim is likely the better fit when vehicle space or a possible 3-across setup is the priority. The Revolve360 Extend may be the better fit when you want more seating space and a high-back booster mode.
